fancy no one knows anything about except perhaps Sir THOMAS WADE. any rate, I think an expression of opinion on the part of this Chamber would do good rather than harm. To place the representative of the Colony in minority at once in anything that is going to be done, would simply be playing with the question.
Mr. WELSH. Would it not be better to say "the Committee he requested to make representations protesting, etc."
The CHAIRMAN.--I think it would be better to let the resolution stand as it is, in case the Government should turn round on us and say they have no official intimation of the appointment.

Mr. SHARP.-Would it be well to add a reason, that the Chamber feels his appointment will not carry with it the confidence of either the foreign or native community? I know very well the Chinese are entirely in sympathy with us. The Chinese merchants here feel that Sir BROOKE is the greatest enemy to the Colony.
Mr. WELSH.-Can you protest against his being appointed, when it is a thing not carried out.
The CHAIRMAN.-We know there is an intention, and can protest against its being carried out.
The resolution was then put and carried unanimously.
NEW MEMBERS.
On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. KAHN, Messrs. CARLOWITZ & Co. were elected members of the Chamber.
COMMITTEE.
The Committee for the current year was then balloted for, and the following gentlemen were elected-the Hon. P. Ryers, the Hon. W. KESWICK, and Messrs. NELSON, KAHN, BELILIOS, DALRYMPLE, HOPPIS MENDEL, and T. JACKSON.
The CHAIRMAN proposed that Hon. W. KESWICK be requested to take the Chair, and Mr. KAHN the Vice-Chair for the year.
Mr. MENDEL seconded.
Mr. KAHN while expressing his thanks, begged to be excused from taking the position of Vice-Chairman.

The CHAIRMAN said he was sure they all regretted that Mr. KAHN would not accept the position, as he had been one of the most useful members, but to any private objection of course they must all bow. He then proposed that Mr. NELSON be elected to the Vice-Chairmanship.
Mr. MENDEL seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
VOTE OF THANKS TO THE OUTGOING CHAIRMAN.
Mr. NELSON. Considering the length of time our worthy Chairman has occupied that position, I think we should express to him the thanks of the Chamber for the energy and ability he has brought to bear on the matters that have come before us. And in proposing this vote of thanks to him for his services during the past year, I would extend it to him for his services for many years past as Chairman of this Chamber of Commerce.
The motion was carried by acclamation.
The CHAIRMAN.--I am highly gratified by the flattering opinion of my services which has been so warmly expressed by the body of the Chamber. I can only say I have taken a great interest in the affairs of the Chamber. My time has been much occupied with other matters and I confess I have not devoted so much time to it sometimes as I ought to have done, but I have taken a great interest in it, and hope I shall continue to do so for some years to come.
The Meeting then terminated.
